Small changes can have a big impact. We've listed simple changes we can all make in our own lives to reduce our environmental footprint. This is a short list of the many things you can do.

Check the boxes next to the changes you'd like to make — or are already doing. As you make choices, you'll see the corresponding potential decrease in the amount of carbon dioxide emissions you put out as part of your new plan.

When you're happy with your list, "sign" your name and hit submit. We'll then give you your very own personal pledge to the planet to get you started.

Eat organic food
I'll eat organic when possible, visit my local farmers market and/or join a CSA group (Community Supported Agriculture). Switching to a diet rich in organic foods can save 4,000 lbs of CO2 from being emitted annually. To find organic food nearby: LocalHarvest.com

Change a light, change the world
ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use at least 2/3 less energy than standard lighting, generate 70 percent less heat, and last up to 10 times longer. Using just one CFL bulb saves 450 lbs. of CO2 and can save you $30 or more in energy costs over its lifetime.

Keep your car tires inflated
By maintaining the proper air pressure in your tires, you'll increase your car's fuel efficiency, save money on gas and help to reduce our dependency on oil.
  • Your car will get up to 3% better fuel economy
  • You will save up to $0.09 / gallon

Help build new wind farms
Purchasing Cool Tags or other wind energy credits helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promotes renewable energy. For each $2 Cool Tag sold, Clif Bar invests 100% of the proceeds in NativeEnergy's WindBulders program. Each Cool Tag offsets on average 300 miles of driving.

Buy a hybrid vehicle
Ditching your gas guzzler for a hybrid will save you a lot of money on gas, drastically reduce your CO2 emissions, and reduce our dependency on oil. Additionally, hybrid owners are often rewarded by the government with significant tax breaks.
  • Opting for a hybrid car can reduce your CO2 output by 16,000 lbs. and save you $3,750 over a period of five years.

Switch to biodiesel in your diesel vehicle
Running your diesel vehicle on biodiesel, a vegetable oil based alternative fuel, is an easy and cost effective way to reduce your vehicle's CO2 emissions. It can be mixed freely with regular diesel in any proportion right in your tank. Using just 20% biodiesel (B20) can reduce your CO2 emissions output by ½ lb. per mile.

Carpool
By carpooling just twice a week, your CO2 output can be reduced by 3,180 lbs., while you can save up to $1,000 per year on fuel. Use this rough calculation to determine how many pounds of carbon dioxide you can personally keep from entering the environment.
  • How many days will you carpool?
  • How many miles is it to work?

Hail the bicycle!
I'll ride my bike (or take public transportation and/or carpool at least one day a week). For every mile I ride my bike instead of driving, I avoid the production of 1lb of CO2. To map bike rides: 2MileChallenge.com

Plant trees
Trees are the ultimate multi-taskers. They provide wildlife habitat, clean the air and water, and fight global warming by removing carbon from the atmosphere. Planting just one tree a year, can remove up to 5,000 lbs of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Reduce, reuse, recycle
I'll reduce the waste I produce by reducing, reusing, recycling and composting. For every pound of waste you eliminate or recycle, I save energy and reduce emissions of CO2 by at least 1 pound. Cutting down my garbage by one half of one large trash bag per week saves at least 1100 pounds of CO2 per year. For info on where to recycle CLIF Bar and other energy bar wrappers: TerraCycle.net

Home heating and cooling
Be careful not to overheat or overcool rooms. Turn your thermostat up in the summer and down in the winter. Lowering your thermostat just two degrees during winter saves 6 percent of heating-related CO2 emissions. That's a reduction of 420 pounds of CO2 per year for a typical home.
